Sustainability & SDGs

Denmark is widely recognized for its successful history in agriculture and fishing, so it should come as no surprise that they pay great attention to protect the environment around them. This considerate approach to the environment highlights why sustainability is a key component of Denmark’s social and economic initiatives.

Their significant steps towards achieving sustainability in all fields started between 1970s and 1980s. Following the 1973 outbreak of the Oil Crisis, Denmark shifted its focus to the energy industry in search of economic opportunities.

State of Green in Denmark mentions the advantages of these green transition on the GDP of the nation since it has grown 100% since 1980. However, energy and water use have only climbed by 6% and 40%. They are setting a great example on how we can address our global problems without risking the economic prosperity and the future of our planet.

In order to guarantee that sustainability stays a priority in all upcoming political decisions, Denmark established its first national climate law in 2014. In 2019, the government integrated climate action into its political framework through the Climate Act.

After decades of impressive and persistent work, Denmark has developed a green energy infrastructure that offers efficiency and a more sustainable way of life. In the Environmental Performance Index 2022, Denmark is now ranked highest due to their fine balance between economic growth and environmental preservation for a better future, as nations confront comparable difficulties.

However, as Denmark only contributes 0.1% of the world’s emissions, it is clear that we have to address our problems globally. That is why, Denmark is also adapting the Sustainable Development Goals which were adopted by the United Nations, into their agenda to build thriving economies and greener societies together.
