Water and Environment
Water is the essence of life, and one of the key sustainability goals of Denmark is to preserve clean, accessible water resources not only for the use of the future generations, but also for the environment. As water is a key item in areas ranging from industries to sewage systems, it usually gets polluted, and for it to re-usable again, water needs to be treated before it is released back to the nature. Unfortunately, globally less than 50% of the wastewater is collected, and only around 20% is treated before it is returned to the environment. However, Denmark treats approximately 95% of its water, which prevents waste accumulation in its rivers and lakes, facilitating sustainable water consumption. Through these efforts, Danish water treatment sector may become climate positive in less than 4 years!
The Danish Environmental Protection Agency (DEPA), a forward-thinking pioneer in wastewater management, is also working towards the preservation of water and how to create strategic sector cooperation on water efficiency. River basin management, environmental water quality monitoring, point-source pollution management, and dialogue-based compliance promotion toward business are among Denmark’s strongholds in this field. They are promoting effective communication and guaranteeing nationwide coverage of more than 95% of marine water bodies by utilizing cutting-edge ecosystem modelling software, leading the way in environmental conservation with its 2021–2027 River Basin Management Plans. Denmark sets an example for sustainable resource management globally by valuing collaboration, accepting new ideas, and combining stakeholder involvement with scientific approach.
