Onshore & Offshore Wind
Wind power is one of the most widespread kinds of renewable energy in Denmark. At the same time wind power is the kind of renewable energy that has come furthest in terms of being competitive with other energy technologies. Today, nearly 50% of the Danish electricity production derives from wind turbines. Furthermore, onshore wind turbines are one of the cheapest ways to expand power production.
Therefore, wind power plays an important role in the transformation of the energy system, which shall ensure that Denmark will no longer be dependent on fossil fuels in 2045.
Offshore wind energy was developed on the basis of the Danish success with onshore wind power. Denmark was the first country in the world to install an offshore wind farm, which was the wind farm Vindeby close to Lolland in 1991.

Denmark’s over 30 years of offshore wind experience gives an important international role in sharing experiences, best practices and lessons learnt with other countries looking at offshore wind as a cost-competitive and reliable energy source.
Today, Denmark has 648 off-shore and 6300 on-shore wind turbines, generating electricity to such an extent that it can meet the demands of 5.4 million households. Through improvements and optimizations in the technology, wind power has become by far the cheapest energy source, even surpassing fossil fuels!
Danish government set a target to deploy 12.9 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
